Winter solstice lanterns

Today is Winter solstice, which marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year. It has been cold around here lately, we've been lucky enough to have beautiful sunny days but the mornings are covered with the thickest of frosts, that often don't lift until after lunch.

This afternoon we made some simple jar lanterns, some washi tape, old jars and tea light candles are all that's needed. The little activity gave us the chance to talk about what Winter solstice is and the changing seasons.

We talked about the fun things we still have lined up for the rest of Winter, a bon-fire night, a trip to the snow, and perhaps some motorbike riding in the mud.

We also talked about looking forward to some warmer weather and for the flowers to be blooming again.

We lit our candles and sat them outside. They look lovely in the dark and tomorrow I will add some wire around the top and hang them around the deck.

Now we're all rugged up in front of the fire. I'm going to go find a bag of marshmallows and toast a few before it's bed time.

Happy Winter Solstice. x
